First Year (11th Class) Math Text Book - PDF

11th Class Math Book By Punjab Board

This first edition of the Intermediate Part-1 Mathematics book is a collaborative effort by four esteemed professors: Prof. Shamshad Muhammad Lodhi (late), Prof. Muhammad Sharif Ghouri, Prof. Sanaullah Bhatti, and Prof. Khalid Saleem. The book has been meticulously edited and supervised by Mazhar Hayat. It was published by Nadeem Lawbook House and printed by G.F Printing Press in Lahore, in April 2018.

What does the book contain?

This Punjab Text Book is divided into two sections. The first section, focusing on algebra, begins with chapter 1 and concludes with chapter 8. It covers various topics such as number systems, sets, matrices, quadratic equations, partial fractions, sequences, series, probability, and binomial theorem. Most of these concepts are already familiar to students to some extent, except for the last three. Therefore, the algebra portion primarily serves as a revision of previously learned concepts. The second section, comprising the remaining six chapters, is dedicated to trigonometry.

Chapter No. 1 : Number Systems

The chapter starts by addressing the question of why it was necessary to extend the number system beyond natural numbers. It covers the progression from rational and irrational numbers to real numbers, and eventually explores the concept of complex numbers, which represents the most extensive set of number systems. The properties and graphical representation of complex numbers are thoroughly explained in this chapter.

Chapter No. 2 : Sets, Functions & Groups

The chapter commences by revisiting familiar concepts such as Sets and introduces a new concept of "Logic: Inductive and deductive." It establishes a connection between set theory and logic through truth sets. The chapter then progresses to the topic of functions and their types, which have been previously covered. However, new concepts covered in this chapter include linear and quadratic functions, the inverse of a function, binary operations, their properties, and groups.

Chapter No. 3 : Matrices & Determinants

Up until this point, students have been acquainted with finding the determinant, adjoint, and inverse of a 2 by 2 matrix. However, this chapter delves into techniques for determining the determinants of matrices of higher orders and deriving methods to solve sets of 2 or more homogeneous and non-homogeneous linear equations using matrices. It should be noted that this chapter is extensive and demands ample practice.

Chapter No. 4 : Quadratic Equation

A captivating chapter explores second-degree equations in one and two variables, presenting various methods for solving them. Additionally, the chapter covers equations that may not be quadratic but can be transformed into quadratic form through specific substitutions. It also delves into cube roots and fourth roots of unity, including their properties, and introduces synthetic division. Throughout this chapter, we establish intriguing generalizations concerning the relationships between equation roots and coefficients, deriving equations from given roots, and predicting the nature of roots through the quadratic equation discriminant.

Chapter No. 5 : Partial Fractions

This chapter focuses on the straightforward resolution of rational fractions into partial fractions, exploring various cases and techniques involved in the process.

Chapter No. 6 : Sequences & Series

This comprehensive chapter introduces new concepts of series and sequences along with related terms like arithmetic progression, geometric progression, and harmonic progression. It explores the relationships between these progressions. Additionally, the chapter explains the use of sigma notation to represent series in a concise form.

Chapter No. 7 : Permutation, Combination & Probability

The chapter introduces the concepts of permutation and combination, which are used to determine the number of possible arrangements in various scenarios. These concepts are particularly useful when predicting outcomes or making decisions in experiments or events. By understanding these concepts, one can gain insights and make informed predictions, almost like a fortune teller who knows the variables involved.

Chapter No. 8 : Mathematical Induction & Binomial Theorem

Building upon the foundations laid in Chapter 6, this chapter progresses to explore summations and introduces the concept of mathematical induction. It also delves into a theorem that enables the expansion of algebraic expressions with two terms raised to any power. Through the deduction of general results and the provision of practical applications, the chapter aims to deepen understanding and showcase the relevance of the theorem.

Chapter No. 9 : Fundamentals Of Trigonometry

An essential chapter that covers the fundamental concepts of trigonometry, including key terminology and standard guidelines to be followed when working with trigonometric functions.

Chapter No. 10 : Trigonometric Identities

The chapter introduces the "Fundamental Law of Trigonometry" and explores trigonometric identities involving half, double, and triple angles. It provides crucial explanations on how to relate the sum, difference, and product of sines and cosines to simplify problem-solving.

Chapter No. 11 : Trigonometric Functions & Their Graphs

A concise chapter explains the graphical representation of trigonometric functions, discussing their domains, ranges, and the fundamental concept of periodicity.

Chapter No. 12 : Application Of Trigonometry

You will encounter challenging tasks in this chapter, involving numerous derivations and results to remember. By this point, you will have acquired a solid foundation in trigonometry. Consequently, in this chapter, you will gain proficiency in manipulating trigonometric equations, marking a significant progress towards the practical applications of trigonometry. This application is particularly evident in the geometry of triangular systems and their connection with circles.

Chapter No. 13 : Inverse Trigonometric Functions

This chapter focuses on the concept of inverse trigonometric functions, which aid in determining the angles corresponding to given values of trigonometric functions. It delves into the properties of inverse trigonometric functions, including their ranges, domains, graphical representations, as well as the derivation and proof of addition and subtraction formulas associated with these functions.

Chapter No. 14 : Solution Of Trigonometric Equations

This concise chapter discusses the resolution of trigonometric equations. It emphasizes that having a solid understanding of the concepts covered in previous chapters greatly simplifies the comprehension and application of the methods used to solve these equations.
