ABOUT STANFORD UNIVERSITY
Stanford University is a really big and important place in the United States. It started in 1885 and opened six years later. It's a special place where both boys and girls can learn together. The university is in California, close to San Francisco, in a place known as Silicon Valley. This area is famous for being a hub of innovation and technology.
After the Second World War, Stanford encouraged new ideas, and this led to the birth of Silicon Valley—a place where many tech companies started. By 1970, Stanford had important technology like a linear accelerator and a part of the early internet.
The campus is huge, covering 8,180 acres, and it's where most students live and study. There are 700 buildings for different subjects, and Stanford has 40 departments and four professional schools. They also have labs and institutes for special research.
Stanford is a place where really smart people study and work. They have 21 Nobel Prize winners, and many famous people have studied there. Herbert Hoover , who later became the 31st president of the United States, was part of the first class at Stanford!
Google's founders met at Stanford, and many successful companies, like Nike, Netflix, and Instagram, have connections to Stanford. The first American woman in space, Sally Ride, also studied there.
Stanford has raised a lot of money to make the university even better. They collected more than $6.2 billion, and some of it was used for cool projects like a big stem cell research facility, a new business school campus, and even an art museum.
Stanford's unofficial motto is in German, and it means "the wind of freedom blows." It shows that Stanford values freedom and encourages new ideas and discoveries.
