UK Planning to Kick Out Foreign Students With Low Grades

The UK is thinking about making rules for international students who stay in the country after finishing their studies. They might have to leave if they don't get good grades.

Reportedly, the UK Migration Advisory Committee is checking the graduate visa. This is part of a plan by the Home Secretary, James Cleverly, to lower migration by 300,000 people.

The report said that over 98,000 students from other countries got visas to stay in the UK for two years after they finished studying. This was a 74% increase from the year before.

Also, only 0.7 percent of students who applied for the two-year graduate visa were not allowed to stay after they finished their studies.

People in charge are worried that some students might be using the graduate visa to get simple jobs or stay in the country without needing to find a proper job.

The head of the MAC, Professor Brian Bell, said that you don't need specific grades from your university course for this.

He said they're checking if it's a good idea to make a rule that says students need certain grades or achievements for this visa.

Also, the committee will talk about if they should make strict rules that say students must go to certain universities or finish specific courses to stay in the UK.

But he said right now there aren't any rules. He also said that if someone has enough money, they can stay in the UK for two years without doing anything.

"You could work for a small wage or a big one," he said.

When Boris Johnson introduced the two-year visa, the MAC didn't like it. They proposed a six month extension after graduation where students would need to find a job or go back home.

Also, Professor Bell said the visa is a good way to bring in students and help universities make money. But now they're thinking about allowing only very skilled graduates to get it.
